Jamie Dimon's Key Traits

These are four key traits Jamie Dimon evaluates when hiring a new employee:

-Curiosity
"Learning is our lifelong responsibility," Jamie told the audience. He seeks out people who demonstrate an intellectual curiosity about the bank, our customers and the world.

-People skills
The ability to relate to others is critical in any job, not just those that have customer contact.

-A Strong Work Ethic
"I didn’t come out of business school thinking I would work this hard," Jamie admitted. He cited the American military as an example of an organization with a strong work ethic. "Training is everything; everyone knows his or her jobs, and gives the maximum individual effort," he said.

-Character
"I don’t believe you can teach integrity, but there are ethical choices out there, and they’re yours to make," Jamie said

Boasting at work

James 4:16 (New International Version)
"As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil."

Question: Why do people boast at work?
Possible Answer: To gain recognition for what they perceive are accomplishments.

Why do they want the recognition?
Possibly to boost their sagging ego? Maybe in hopes that the recognition will translate to bigger raises & bonuses (monitary gain)?

James 5:1-5 (New International Version)
"1Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. 2Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. 3Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. 4Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. 5You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter."

Give ultimate thanks...

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (New International Version)
18give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

This means give thanks for everything...during times of trouble you should continue to be thankful for what you have been given - even the difficult circumstance itself, for it is the Lord that has put you in that situation.

Delight in Weakness

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (New International Version)

9But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. 10That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

I heard James Laurinaitis speak and state this was one of his favorite verses.

Focus

"The only thing a player can control at golf is his own game; so concern about what other competitors may or may not be doing is both a useless distraction and a waste of energy."

2003 Buckeye seniors on FOCUS:

  • Focus is when your mental attention is centered on what you need to do. Nothing else can get into your head.

  • Focus is when someone can resist temptation in the present to further pursue a goal in the future.

  • Focus means concentrating on your responsibility.

  • Focus means total concentration. Committing to something and staying with it until it is done and done right. Never giving up.

  • Focus is the ability to concentrate on something by ignoring outside, important forces that can interfere with the task at hand. Taking advantage of all opportunities that facilitate the task and increase the chance of success.

  • Focus is disciplined and zeroed in on the goal and only the goal.

A Disciplined Player...

  1. Knows the importance of being on time.

  2. Has learned the value of regular hours and good training habits from working hard in practice.

  3. Has learned that the team comes before himself. This strengthens his character as he is sometimes called upon to sacrifice for others.

  4. Has learned to take orders; in taking orders, he learns how to give them.

  5. Knows that discipline is the essence of every successful organization; as a member of the team, he understands the need for it.

  6. Has learned that many of these things establish a degree of self-discipline.

When no one else is looking...

Discipline is what you do when no one else is looking! It's being considerate of the other person. Having good personal habits--you are polite, on time, and take care of business with pride. We must be disciplined as individuals first, and then as a team.

Be Where You Are

"Paradise is where I am." - Voltaire

If you're in paradise where you are-not wishing you were someplace else-that's the right attitude. If you're always wishing you were someplace else, what you'll discover is that the other place has just as many problems and difficulties-maybe more-as the place you are right now.

It's easy to think that somewhere out there is a perfect place where everyone is always happy, has a bigger house, a nicer car, and a more beautiful or handsome spouse. But that's an illusion. A mirage. If we followed Voltaire, we would see that today, right where we are, is the place God has put us-whether it's a mansion or a studio apartment. And if that's true, there can be no better place, because paradise is where we are. It's that kind of thinking-that kind of attitude-that we try to instill in our players at Ohio State.

Do good and suffer...

1 Peter 3:8-22 (New International Version)
Suffering for Doing Good 8Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. 9Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. 10For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. 11He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. 12For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."[a]
13Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear[b]; do not be frightened."[c] 15But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. 18For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, 19through whom[d] also he went and preached to the spirits in prison 20who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge[e] of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

1 Peter 4:12-19 (New International Version)
Suffering for Being a Christian 12Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. 13But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. 14If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. 17For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18And, "If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?"[a]
19So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

Respect authority

Romans 13 (New International Version)
Submission to the Authorities

1Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. 4For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. 6This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. 7Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

1 Peter 2:13-25 (New International Version)
Submission to Rulers and Masters

13Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, 14or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. 15For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. 16Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. 17Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.
18Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh. 19For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God. 20But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. 21To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 22"He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth."[a] 23When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. 25For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

nothing special

It is our human nature to be active and the nature of every exsistence. As long as we are alive, we are always doing something. But as long as you think, "I am doing this," or "I have to do this," or "I must attain something special," you are actually not doing anything. When you give up, when you no longer want something, or when you do not try to do anything special, then you do something. When there is no gaining idea in what you do, then you do something.

From this book:

Reading and studying written text

The teaching which is written on paper is not the true teaching. Written teaching is a kind of food for your brain. Of course it is necessary to take some food for you brain, but it is more important to be yourself by practicing the right way of life.

From this book:

not one, not two

Our body and mind are not two and not one. If you think your body and mind are two, that is wrong; if you think that they are one, that is also wrong. Our body and mind are both two and one. We usually think that if something is not one, it is more than one; if it is not singular, it is plural. But in actual experience, our life is not only plural, but also singular. Each one of us is both dependent and independent.

From this book:

shoshin = beginner's mind

Our 'original mind' includes everything within itself. You should not lose your self-sufficient state of mind. This does not mean a closed mind, but actually an empty mind and a ready mind. If your mind is empty, it is always ready for anything; it is open to everything. In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities; in the expert's mind there are few.

If you discriminate too much, you limit yourself. If you are too demanding or too greedy, your mind is not rich and self-sufficient. If we lose our original self-sufficient mind, we will lose all precepts. When your mind becomes demanding, when you long for something, you will end up violating your own precepts: not to tell lies, not to steal, not to kill, not to be immoral, and so forth. If you keep your original mind, the precepts will keep themselves.

In the beginner's mind there is no thought, "I have attained something." All self-centered thoughts limit our vast mind. When we have no thought of achievement, no thought of self, we are true beginners. Then we can really learn something. The beginner's mind is the mind of compassion. When our mind is compassionate, it is boundless.

The thieves, the liars, the sinners ,
The alcoholics and the trash.
There stood the kid from seventh grade
Who swiped my lunch money twice.
Next to him was my old neighbor
Who never said anything nice.
Herb, who I always thought
Was rotting away in hell,
Was sitting pretty on cloud nine,
Looking incredibly well.
I nudged Jesus, 'What's the deal?
I would love to hear Your take.
How'd all these sinners get up here?

Do not brag or boast about yourself...

1I must go on boasting. Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord. 2I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows. 3And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows— 4was caught up to paradise. He heard inexpressible things, things that man is not permitted to tell. 5I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses. 6Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say.
7To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.

Smallness of Arrogance

Anyone who does not exercise compassion is ignorant of the reality that everyone needs it at some time in life; or we forget that someone has blessed us with compassion at a time when we needed it. That is the smallness of arrogance. It is a disease of the soul. It can be highly contagious. Ignorance is its carrier. It ravages the souls of those who think there is no reality beyond themselves.
Those who suffer from the smallness of arrogance think that ill fortune is the fault of those who suffer it; that good fortune is a privilege that belongs to them. Whatever path you take, Grandson, do not succumb to arrogance and endanger your soul.
